To the left is the Lily symbolizing the purity of the Virgin Mary. To the right are the fish in the form of the Triquetra. The Triquetra is an ancient symbol of the Holy Trinity. The fish is the oldest symbol of Christ. In times of persecution, the early Christians had to go underground. In order to identify themselves to one another, they would draw the sign of a fish.
